Hydrant InformationFire hydrants are a vital part in all urban fire fighting operations in and around the Portarlington area. Having a clean hydrant can save precious minutes when the fire brigade initially gets on-scene of a fire or incident, this is especially vital in the early stages of a house fire. Therefore in all fire plans proper fire hydrant maintenance should be included in bush fire and urban situations. What can you do?As a resident we don't suggest that you actually check and clean inside the hydrant box, but we do ask that you keep the hydrant cover clear of any dirt, grass or parked vehicles and also keep the hydrant posts clear of any trees or bushes and refrain from painting the posts a colour other than red and white. By doing this you not only help us save time in the critical first moments of a fire fight, but also allow us to more effectively fight a fire. If it was your house on fire, then you would want us actually fighting the fire, not locating a hydrant and digging it out.
